I'm on it.

10 - 3x = 2x - 8x + 40
Collect Like Terms
10 - 40 = 3x + 2x - 8x
Add
-30 = -3x
Divide both sides by -1, to get rid of the negative sign.
30 = 3x
Divide both sides by 3.
10 = x, so x = 10.

2) 9(y + 2) = 3(y - 2)
Distribute
9y +2*9 = 3y - 2*3
Multiply
9y + 18 = 3y - 6
Divide through by common factor 3, to make mnipulating easier.
3y + 6 = y - 2
Collect like terms
3y - y = -2 -6
Subtract
2y = -8
Divide
y = -4

Put all the Xs together on the left side and all the numbers on the right side:

-3x-2x+8x=40-10
3x=30
x=30/3
x=10

2. Do operation as indicated. 9*y+9*2=3*y-3*-2
9y+18=3y-6
9y-3y = -6-18
6y = -24
y= -24/6
y= -4

1. 10 -3x = 2x - 8x +40
= -6x +40
10 = -6x +3x+40 = -3x +40
-30 = -3x ---> x = 10

2. 9(y+2) = 3(y-2)
9y +18 = 3y - 6
6y +18 = -6
6y = -24 ---> y = -4

1)10-3x=2x-8x+40
combine the like terms
-30=-3x
10=x

2)9(y+2)=3(y-2)
first the EASY way to do this is to divide both side by three
instead of distributing this will make things faster
3(y+2)=y-2
now you have 3y+6=y-2
combine the like terms
2y=-8
y=-4

For problem one you need to simplify:
10-3x=2x-8x+40 : add like terms
10-3x=-6x+40 : now subtract 10 from both sides
-3x=-6x+30 : now add 6x to both sides
3x=30 : now divide both sides by 3
x=10

For the second problem:
9(y+2) = 3(y-2) :expand the equation by multiplying
9y+18 = 3y-6 : now subtract 18 from both sides
9y=3y-24 : now subtract 3y from both sides
6y=-24 : now divide both sides by 6
y = -4

1)

10 – 3x = 2x – 8x + 40
10-40 = 3x +2x - 8x
-30 = -3x
x=10

2.
9(y + 2) = 3(y – 2)
9y + 18 = 3y -6
9y - 3y = -18 -6
6y = -24
y = -24/6
y= -4

1. area of triange: base * height/2 let the base length be x cm 12 = x * 3x/2 24 = 3x^2 8 = x^2 x = (+-) 2 sqrt(2) since length can only be positive, the base is 2 sqrt(2) cm calculate height accordingly 2. you can make 12 x 6 feet with bricks laying the same direction the number of bricks you'd need is (12/3*12) * (6/3*12) = 8*144 the remaining 12*2 would need the same number of bricks as 12*3 anyway, so that's 4*144=576 more. together, he's need 1728 bricks, making that $3456
