Assuming you're talking about Northern Ireland here, I think genuine progress has been made in the last few years, especially with the setting-up of the NI Assembly. With the passing of the Northern Ireland Act in 1998, the future of NI rests squarely in its hands - Section 2 of the Act providing for a referendum on it rejoining Ireland.

It's also worth bearing in mind the Scots parallel, as the DUP's Gregory Campbell pointed out in April, if the Scots hold their referendum in 2009/10 (as is proposed) on independence, then that would certainly start people thinking in NI. The future's bright for Northern Ireland, and I think the Union as we know it may well have had its day.

Occupied? That's a loaded word. You can't just kick people out because you don't agree with their politics, this is the 21st century, and those who, as you put it, are 'occupying' the six counties regard the place as their home.

I think they are taking time out to think, and it's the summer when politicians go on holidays.

The progress that has been made has been a very long time coming, and at very great cost. Allow them their break and time out to think. The greater the changes, the more slowly they need to happen.

I haven't heard or read anything about it lately. That could reflect a stalemate. Or just the BBC not bothering.

Do you have any good links on the current situation?

Not much at all what you don't see or think about isn't really important.
