From an Army Officer (me), here's some things that Hillary and Obama would have to do to get respect from me (aside from the mandetory respect required for the office):
1. Let us finish our job. Whether or not we ever should have gone to Iraq is a pointless debate at this juncture. If we pull out without securing a stable Iraq it will destroy the reputation of us, the war fighters. Then we can have another round of the late 70s / early 80s, i.e., the military being the butt of every joke.
2. Don't play usual Dem games and cut our funding, cut our numbers, and close our bases. One issue we have had to deal with in GWOT is that after the Clinton years it took time to rebuild a military capable of fighting a large scale long term war. We still don't have the numbers we need even now. So if they cut the military (presumably going hand and hand with ending the war(s) ), when the next one comes we'll be really hurting.
3. Disavow the way thier party has used the military as a political play thing. Refusing to vote funding to the troops in order to try to get thier timetable in Iraq inserted was beyond recklous, it was sinister. Thank god it didn't come to it, but it nearly got to the point where men and women in the box wouldn't even have the funding to run the war - i.e. survive.
Based on these two's records, I don't think it is likely to happen. I will however, should they win, continue to respect the office of the commander in chief.
And for the record, shortbus is right. Joking on the president is a time honred ritual, as well as joking on your immediate supervisor, and unit commander. However, joking may or may not mean disrespect. Often it is just in good fun.

Having served and knowing service people, neither Obama or Hillary would ever get the warm reception that Bush has received, even though they'd get the same respect for the office.
The pictures of President Bush in his surprise visit to Iraq show more than just respect for the office. You never saw a picture of Clinton with the troops like those. NEVER.
How many of the naysayers actually served?

First thing Hilary needs to stop flip/flopping, on the war, first she says she read all the Intel reports and votes for the war, next she is against it and was lied to, even then though she STATED that she read all the Intel reports and bush was justified, third, She says the surge won't work, Now since the surge is producing results she says the surge is working. Also Hilary said nothing when her fellow Democrat Harry Reid said we already lost the war while we are busting, our butts in the field, or when a DEMOCRAT senator said it would be bad for the democratic party if we succeed in Iraq. Also the Military went under one of the biggest down-sizing in U.S. Military history under her old man, troops at 15 years in were forced out and had to take a dramatic reduction in retirement pay.
Also these terror attacks happened under Bill and he provided little responses for each of them
Terror attacks on Bill's watch
93 WTC
96 Khobar Towers 19 Airman dead 300 wounded
98 2 U.S. Embassy Bombings 5,000 wounded
98 Refused to take Bin Laden into custody
99 Refused to take Bin Laden into custody
2000 U.S.S. Cole Bombing
2001 9-11 took 6 YEARS TO PLAN
Obama saying were air raiding villages and killing innocent civilians hasn't earned him 2 many friends on the Military side, Also Obama said nothing when his fellow Democrat Harry Reid said we already lost the war while we are busting, our butts in the field, or when a DEMOCRAT senator said it would be bad for the democratic party if we succeed in Iraq.
Obama seems that he has NO idea on how the military works, and wants to sit down with our enemies shows a sign of weakness due to the fact we think he would cave into terror demands because the polls say so.

You get what you give. They haven't so they won't.
One good thing that's come out of the democrat's rush to surrender is their falling over each other to proclaim their new found love and respect for the military. (The 'new found' was my modifier, they're not actually calling their respect 'new found'.) Anyway, by constantly proclaiming their love and respect, they seem to actually be believing it. Liberals are saying, "Hey, we respect them too!" in an effort to gain credibility for their bizarre view and actions. But the thing is, it's becoming fashionable among liberals to 'respect' the military. Will it fall out of 'fashion' when this effort is concluded, such respect is no longer politically beneficial and the men and women eventually come home? Probably, but perhaps a little of that will stick. Hey, it's a dream I have. It's certainly better than the standard democratic response to the men and women in uniform which is to spit on them..both literally and figuratively.

Some of these posts on here are laughable. Of course the military supports the President and gives him the utmost respect as he does them. If Hill or Osama were in charge it would disgrace the brave men and women in uniform because they would know they wouldn't be supported. It's funny how these spineless libs get on here and give their spill about how military people feel. They don't have a clue....

The only respect Bush has from the military is the fact that they are honor bound to obey the Commander in Chief, regardless of who he or she is.

I am sure that they would choose a competent Sec. of Defense instead of some arrogant corporate bozo like Rumsfeld who sent troops into combat without proper armor and then snidely dressed down a soldier who asked him why he had done this.

I can't answer what Clinton or Obama WOULD do because I'm not them. But one only has to look at history to see what democrats have done to our military to get an idea of what they would do once back in power.
* Closure of military bases.
* Cuts in military budgets
* Cuts in FBI budgets
* Cuts in CIA budgets
* Cuts in military programs (missile defense, stealth, etc)
* Withdrawl of troops from strategic locations
This isn't my OPINION. These are facts.

I don't believe your assumption that Bush gets "respect" (other than than afforded a CIC) from the military. I think many in the ranks recognize Iraq as being a fatal mistake.
The military is obligated to show the same towards anyone holding the office.
