I'm facing a delicate situation where the poor thing is frail but still rather vital at times. At other times she seems ready to die where she is. She is 18.

Every time that I have faced this issue there has come a day when the animal looks at me and I know it is time. I truly believe that the only one that know when is the "right time" is the owner who has loved and cared for the animal. Your love for the animal will not let it suffer beyond what would be the desires of the animal.
When you know it is time - do something that the animal loves with them one lost time and then give then the gift of peace.
They are a part of you and will live forever in your heart.

Being rather silly you forgot to say what animal we are discussing. If it's a tortoise, it may live another 100 years. 18 is, on the other hand, very old for a cat or dog. When asking a question, read it back to yourself and check that all the essential elements are included. D'oh!!!!

It seems like you already know she is dying, but you can let her keep going as long as she seems happy and not in pain. If she is in pain, she will stop eating and lose interest in everything. At that point it is only fair to have her put down. Good luck

Thats a really personal decision that you need to sit down and think VERY hard about. It will no doubt be difficult, but you have to think about the cats well being above all else.

The only time to have a animal put to sleep would be if it is living in pain everyday.

I dunno. I suppose it's different with each one. My Pigfood is also 18, and is not showing any signs of slowing down too much.
Boy is only 13 and losing his voice and can't get up and has a hard time walking sometimes.
