To start off, change a little cash at the Airport to Euros. For getting cash after that, use an ATM/Debit Card. Also, try to find out which banks in Europe are Correspondence banks with yours. That way you will never get charged fees for withdrawing some cash and the exchange rate is very, VERY good.

Don't use a credit card for cash advances! Interest rates are high and they start compounding the same day.

All major credit cards are accepted in Europe. I've noticed that when I use my Visa, I get charged a small foreign transaction fee. I don't get charged this fee when I've used my American Express, though.

One last thing, call your bank/credit card company and let them know that you will be traveling. Give them your dates, the countries and approx. how much you will be spending. This will prevent your cards from being blocked by anti-fraud protections and keep you from being in an embarrassing situation during your trip.

WHY do you people NEVER SAY WHAT YOU CAN DO? When these questions get asked, the person asking them NEVER says WHAT SKILLS THEY HAVE... and that can be CRITICAL in giving a usable answer. If you can't DO anything in Canada then you won't be greated by the locals in Europe and offered a job doing brain surgery. AND... there are on 'Agencies' that will give you money to go live in Europe... in fact... quite the contrary... if you want to live in Europe, you have to PROVE that you have an INDEPENDENT INCOME before they will grant you resident alien status. I first went to Europe when I was 17.. had a 1 month Youthrail pass and $1000 for a graduation present from High School... and.. I had my guitar and a TALENT... I could support myself by playing my guitar on the street during the day and by playing piano in bars for tips at night... and the only reason I left Europe after 3 years was the pressure I got from my parents to go to University. Do you see the difference... I HAD A TALENT... and if there was an internet back in the 1950's and I would have asked the very same question YOU just asked... I would have said... I'm a good guitar player and I can play the keyboard... because THAT is a SKILL... THAT is a TALENT... and someone could have given me a real answer based on my skills and talents. So... like I said... WHAT CAN YOU DO?

ATM for cash, and expect to pay everything up to 15 Euro ($20) in cash, as credit cards are not as often used for small amounts.
Credit cards for the bigger payments, like the hotel bills.
Do not take traveler cheques, they are a thing of the past. They cost to get, to get your money back and most people in Europe do not like it.
Bring a credit card from MasterCard or Visa, and a debit card that draws on your bank account using the same services. (Mostly they also show a cirrus logo.)
Check with you bank that your card is OK for using abroad, and what each use is going to cost you.

American Express is not much liked, better bring other cards.
