I wonder what kind of metal they were made of (I forget if they addressed that in the movie). Depending on what it was, it could have lots of uses. You could recycle it for new stuff - think about all the buildings that were destroyed - the metal from the ships could be used to make new girders for new buildings. I imagine they would at least keep one somewhat together as a tourist attraction - so you could do a walk through...
I bet that they would also figure out the power source for the ships and maybe use that as a new way to create power.

The R+D possibilities are limitless. Hell I'd like to see a movie about the political ramifications of such sudden technological advancement.
Would be better that that lame duck we got at the theaters.

Are you JOKING? The governments of the areas where they crashed would immediately sieze them in order to leach out every last bit of alien technology they could get.

well originaly the sequel was gonna involve the survivors searching the wrecks for weapons and new technology in case of any other attacks.
And in the story line there is a second fleet that comes and they use the recovered weapons to fight them.
So either way, its used to find new stuff to use.
