Can we sue the CC company for contacting in-laws, and giving them my social security numbers and stuff. No idea how they got their numbers, even I dont have their number... If its a possibility then how can I do that, how expensive is it? currently I owe then around 16K.

Thanks

Credit companies can contact any individuals that might have information as to your whereabouts, etc., in order to collect a debt. However, they are not allowed to give out confidential information such as social security numbers, driver's license information, etc. You might be able to file a complaint, but I'm not sure you can successfully sue them. Besides, if you won (unless it was a tremendous amount of money), you'd end up just giving it back to the credit company to pay off the debt you owe. Which of course is a good thing if that's all you want out of it.

You could contact the Better Business Bureau in your area to start the ball rolling. As well as, you could contact a lawyer who specializes in financial disputes (use a free consultation if possible) to determine how far you can take the matter.

I'm not sure why a credit card company would give out your soc. number. It serves no purpose in my mind. The only thing I can imagine is they are trying to find you and thought that contacting the in-laws would prompt an angry phone call from you...and then pow they know where you are.

Truthfully, you can sue for anything. The real question is can you win.

Can you sue the credit card company? Yes.

Would you win? No.

Collections officers have many different ways to obtain phone #'s and other contact information for your friends and relatives. It's perfectly legal for your in-laws to be contacted if they are trying to get ahold of you regarding a late payment. Legally, they cannot give out your SSN (really, why would they have anyways?) Instead of wasting time suing them, why don't you just act like an adult and pay your bills??
