I have both Phillip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger. I plan on starting Rivers through out the season almost every game (unless Big Ben turns into the second comming of Warren Moon).
Heres my question, Rivers plays against the Bears week 1 (albeit Chargers play at home) and at the Patriots week 2. Both of these defenses are suppose to be really good this year, where as Big Ben plays @ Clevland week 1 and at home against the Bills week 2.
My gut says start Big Ben the first two weeks as both Clevland and the Bills have 'meh' defenses. Then make the switch in Week 3 to Rivers when the chargers play Green Bay (still a pretty good defense) and the Steelers match up against San Francisco.
I know the Chargers have more offensive weapons, but the steelers have a new offensive plan, and willie parker and hines ward were never too shabby. If what I heard from training camp is true, Big Ben will run a lot of no huddle which he has preformed better at.
What do you guys think?

you have a tough call. I've been doing fantasy football for 15 years. and I know when you see the schedules....you may want to bench one guy over the other; especially if they face a tough opponenet.
I'm with you about Roethlisberger. They are saying he is going to have a good year with the new offense. I'd like to think week #1 he'll do well against Cleveland. Their secondary is weak. Only question in my mind is how soon will they go to the run if they are smoking Cleveland.
Rule #1 of fantasy football is you have to play your best. I go with Big Ben because Cleveland is a rival, a inter-division team. I'm not quite sold on Phillips yet. He's got a new coach (Turner), new #1 WR (Jackson) and their playing the Bears...to me...that just says you have to bench him week #1 at least. also consider he's a young guy and he has to adjust to a new system.
I'd start Ben until he shows he can't put up any numbers. I think with his weapons this year he's going to be solid. In fact the fantasy football site I belong too had him as the #8 fantasy QB this year; not great...but not bad either. I also like Santonio Holmes as a WR too. I wouldn't be surprised if he passed Ward as their #1 WR statistically.
My opinion is Big Ben will turn out to be a better fantasy QB this year..that is, if he says off those motorcycles.

What I to do in these kinds of situations is sit down and actually try to guess exactly what each of my QBs will do against there opponents. This is my guess assuming standard scoring values, please come back and check it after the games...
Rivers week 1 stats: 16/27 for 199 yds, 1 TD 1 INT, Fantasy points = 11
Ben week 1 stats: 18/38 for 218 yds, 1 TD 1 INT, Fantasy points = 11
Rivers week 2 stats: 16/26 for 196 yds, 1 TD 1 INT, Fantasy points = 10
Ben week 2 stats: 18/31 for 240 yds, 2 TD 1 INT, Fantasy points = 15
The first week I would go with Ben even though I believe they will do the same point wise, Ben has a better chance of going past my projections than Rivers vs CHI.
Week two obviously start Ben.

I would start Ben. I think you are overestimating Rivers fantasy potential to begin with. He has yet to be a top-level QB, and who is he going to throw to?
Gates is the man, but after that the WRs are very weak. San Diego is all LT.
With Pittsburgh throwing more this year and Ben healthy, I don't think these two guys are that far off from a fantasy standpoint regardless of the opponent. Rivers has a stronger upside, for sure, but no telling when that actually comes to pass.
The Bears D is VERY tough and the Pats D will be even better this year. I don' t see Rivers doing much against either of those teams.
The Browns and Bills D's are much weaker.
Start Ben weeks one and two

Big Ben might be your best bet for week one and two. After that it will depend on if he is playing like last year or his rokie year. San Diego will more than likely pound the Chicago defense with LT. River will have a few deep balls but I think LT will do most of the scoring. After week one you will know who to put in for week two.

I would start Ben in week 1. But in week 2 start rivers cuz, Richard Seymore is out til week 6 due to injury and Rodney Harrison is suspended the first 4 games due to using HGH. That is two huge holes the Pats. need to fill.

I would seriously start Rivers. Big Ben is going to have issues in the early part of this year.

LT catches lots of passes and can keep defenses honest with his ability to break off a long run, Rivers is a must start because of LT.

New coaches/scheme or not, the Steelers will run the football with a lead. Rivers will have to throw to beat those teams. I would start Rivers. How did you manage to get BOTH those guys?

Favre! Lions! factors! Romo is on hearth as of overdue i think of he would be no distinctive against a packers D that got here off of a loss in the direction of the air against Tampa. Phillip Rivers is going to have a terrible time attempting throw against Assante Samuels and the Eagles D because they are going to smother the run sport.

Start Rivers even if he is facing great defenses. They're concentrating to much on stopping LT.
