I went to a country school and every Friday night we played basketball. After the basketball game we would go to "town" and cruise around. Before the basketball game the boys would race their cars at a place we called the "quarter". Boys, as you probably know, built their own engines and if you won a race it pretty much said that you had the most mechanical ability. When they would let me I would race my Dad's '58 Plymouth stick shift and smoke 'em! Much fun!

In the 50’s cruising the drive-in restaurants was a favorite pastime for us. I think we were tolerated mainly because we were for the most part respectful of property and the other customers. They also got our pogiebait cash as there were no Micky D's.

There were no less than 10 drive in establishments in my hometown of less than 40K population. Cruising was the greatest social outing ever as it allowed us to meet with our friends as well as to make new ones. In jam-packed cars we would often park on the back lot and watch the parade to see who would come through and visit.

My hometown also had a lakefront amusement park with concessions stands, a pinball alley, a roller rink, a swimming pool and a gazebo. The large gazebo was mainly a dance floor with a jukebox. In the summertime there would always be some kids dancing to the new rock-n-roll hits or the Motown tunes.

On Fridays in season it was football or basketball games. A spontaneous drag race could break out at any time and there were the drive-in movies.

Wasn’t it a great time? Kids today could have similar pastimes if they weren’t so disrespectful and destructive.

I graduated in 1968. In small town Texas there were a lot of Friday nights at the football games. That was good clean fun. We also had drag races real late on Friday and Saturday nights. Some of the kids had cars (not me!) and liked to race each other. We had a quarter mile strip of two-lane blacktop just north of town. Not much traffic at night. Now that was exciting. My boyfriend's 1960 Chevy Impala had 4 on the floor shifter, big engine. A buddy's old Cadillac could beat him once in a while but he won most races. There were no cops in our small town. By the time anyone reported the drag racing and the County Sheriff could get there we were all back on Main Street sitting in our cars, looking innocent.

Don't think I should tell my grandkids about this one!

My friend would pick me up and her and I would go to the malls just for the fun of it. We would go into a store trying on all kinds of clothes then picking out the expensive ones. Then we lay the clothes on the counter and say we are going to get one more item that we forgot. While the cashier puts the clothes on the side ready to cash out, my friend and I would be long out the door and into another store to annoy the cashier again.
After, comming to a stop light, we would wait for a moment, then we both would get out to run around the car to then get back in before the light turned green. Well we were not half way around when the light turned green and we formed a big traffic jam. But we sure laughed.

For 3 years I attended a girls Catholic school, we had sock hops, but the nuns ran around with yard sticks to keep us and our dates apart, now at the boys school, they only used a foot long ruler...ah..so much better!

My last year of high school I persuaded my parents to let me go to a public school, they had football games, basketball games, going to the pizza place, going to the movies, lots of dates, but my dad was the gestapo and assistant to the chief of police and had me followed most of the time, which was NOT cool, and who in their right mind would want a second date with "Gestapo's daughter??" Having the cops follow you, scared the crap out of most of them

The movie "American Graffiti"? I was there as it happened living it live in the little town of Modesto, CA where it took place and was later filmed. A fine tribute to a unique bunch of car buffs. My husband-to-be and I did all of the back road racing and 'dragging the Main' downtown. We also drove to the north bay where my husband-to-be raced his lowered candy apple blue Buick.

I was usually at the drive in movies in the summer, or at the roller rink (which is where I met my husband, now married 28 years!). I graduated in 1978.
