I use Murphy's Oil Soap for wood floors on mine. It's safe to use where the floors are not sealed. I don't use anything special to clean or polish the floors. One time I used some floor shine product and it left a weird film on my kitchen floor.

Armstrong one step is a miracle for old hardwood floors. Cleans off all kinds of old sticky stuff and leaves a gleam. Obtain a couple of estimates for professional refinishing (stripping and sealing with some of the new polyurethane products) and start saving towards getting the job done properly in the spring. In the long run you will be preserving the heritage of the old wood and find it much easier to care for your floors with regular dust-mop and weekly damp mop. The floor care specialists can recommend other ways to protect your floor to stretch out the time between refinishing.

Give the 10 to Rayne. Murphys is great, and long established for the purpose of WOOD cleaning,,,even fine furniture.

To SHINE the floors; stripping the old would be the BEST. BUT it sounds like you enjoy the Ambience; the History, of the floor. Certainly there are temp floor finishes, and perhaps Murphys sells one. I'd avoid WAXES.
