If the astronaut put plants inside their sealed helmets, could the plants live off the carbon dioxide given out by the astronaut and the astronaut live off the oxygen given out by the plant, instead of having air canisters on their back?

You could test this theory by placing your head in a plastic bag with a plant. Make sure to seal it tightly so that you can confirm the truth.

Also, make sure you put pillows all around you, or be on a mattress so that when you pass out it wont hurt when you hit the ground.

No. Plants don't put out oxygen nearly fast enough - the astronaut would suffocate. He'd need at least an acre of plants to live like that.

No there is not enough room in a helmet to hold the amount of plants required to produce that amount of oxygen.
Besides which plants only do that when there is lots of light, in the dark they absorb O2 and give off CO2.

No, because plants only put out a small amount of oxygen relative to the needs of a full-grown human being.

The average person puts out 1kg of CO2 per day.

The average tree absorbs 5.89kg of CO2 per YEAR. That's .016kg per day.

You'd need 61 full-grown trees in the astronaut's helmet.

Technically it could happen, if you found a plant which produced oxyen quick enough. Also you would need a water and light source since plants need that too. Maybe you should try to invent one... if you did I'm sure you'd be rich.

NASA was planing on that for deep space travel. First u need CO2 and a plant in the presence of sun light.

You would need a space helmet the size of a football stadium for it to work.

I agree with the first answer...

Besides... why would you do that when we have oxygen tanks anyway?
