Why do universities need professors?

Why not make do with lecturers and managers?

Because someone has to write the courses and figure out the curriculum and manage the lecturers.

Because universities are not high schools. Their job is to create knowledge, not just to convey it. Lecturers can report on what someone else found, but it is not the same thing as pushing forward the forefront of knowledge.
