I'm a graphic designer from NYC, and I'm looking for a city in Texas for jobs, housing, good schooling and artsy community.
In my eyes, NYC is everything especially as a designer. Galleries, theater, people, shopping etc. I love walking in central park, going to the met, shopping and having the diversities of people from every walk of life.
Recently, we've made some trips for his conferences and we just got back from Chicago and I realized how wonderful it really can be outside of NYC. We are considering Texas for his job, we were in Houston with some friends and didn't get to explore the city. Maybe my perspective was skewed.
So I'm thinking of planning another trip but I'm looking for some suggestions. Does Texas have any artsy communities with culture, museums and a young vibe?
Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio any transplants out there from NYC.
Thanks for your help.

Honestly, I'd stay with your husband and go to Houston. You can find a graphics design job anywhere, but he will have a lot more difficulty finding a job in Austin than Houston.

I lived in Austin for a brief stint and sadly, had to move back home to Pittsburgh. It's a college town but it's also the cultural heart of Texas. I think the big seller for me was that it is an artsy little town and being the photographer that I am, I felt like I was at home. It's also a music mecca. No matter what night of the week it is, you can bet that you can find someone fantastic playing around town. There is also a lot of cultural diversity. I've also been to Dallas, Houston and San Antonio and you will have more luck with the big companies with graphic design there but they don't have the same feel that Austin does. I'm going back next week and I can't wait to set foot on Austin soil again, I miss her!! Good Luck!

Well, Houston is definitely not NYC, but it's a wonderful place to live. Great jobs abound and the low of living is surprising for most people. Lot's of great housing. It is not a walking city except for The Heights, The Woodlands, and the Museum District. Public transportation is not used by the masses here---everyone has a car. The Museum District is one of the best in the country. We have the arts, theatres, symphony, over 6,000 restaurants with almost 300 different types of cuisine, The Zoo, Herman Park, The Kemah Boardwalk, Galveston, Old Town Spring, The Woodlands area, Lake Conroe, Lake Houston, so many things to do. You name it and we have it. Many great shopping malls. Our culture has much more of a down home feel to it than high stepping New York, but this doesn't mean it's not as great---it's just different. The people are soooo much more friendly and kind and will help you. This, as you know, does not occur on the street in NYC. Welcome to our great city, which by the way, covers more than 600 square miles.

I have to agree with the other answerers to this question. Austin is a GREAT city, but the art scene in Dallas is much more lively. I don't know about Houston or San Antonio. The museums in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex are much larger and better endowed than anything in Austin.

Austin is young, liberal, educated, artsy, green, and beautiful, but it is definitely not a big city. Although it has a lively art scene, you'll have to go to Houston and/or Dallas for the big museums/collections.
Houston is probably the most diverse area in Texas and it has a lot going for it, but it's also huge (mostly sprawl) and humid.
You could probably find the scene you're looking for in any of the big cities, but Austin is probably the most livable city and a lot of people who live in Austin wouldn't live anywhere else in Texas, with good reason. Any place in Texas (especially Austin) is going to be a big change of pace from NYC.

Stay away from Houston, it is very ugly and crime is high. Also very humid. I lived there for a year and will never go back. My favorite city has always been Austin. VERY ARTSY! Wonderful parks and lakes, great hill country close by, wonderful downtown life with a ton of new lofts coming in every day. Wonderful night life and live music with great restaraunts and bars, you will love it. My brother just moved back to Austin from NY, he missed the nature. He works downtown and loves it. You will be suprised at how many people from up north you will meet that have made the move. I would say that Austin is the most liberal city in Texas and the best for young people.

Houston is the best for job opportunities but Austin is the best overall city in Texas. It's more fun and vibrant than Houston or Dallas and is the most liberal city in Texas.

Houston is famous for its vast medical center. World class doctors. I can't say as I've heard much about Austin's medical facilities. Which city to live in? It's a toss up. Houston has a better theater district/symphony/ ballet, etc. Austin has better 'cool people' music and drier weather. I love Austin, but as a native Houstonian, that's the place for me. Both cities have their forward thinking crowds and beautiful homes. I suggest you visit both cities to get a real feel for the place you want to live in. Both cities are fabulous, but they cater to different tastes. In Austin you're more likely to see artists sitting at a cafe with musicians and millionaires dressed in ragged jeans cowboy boots. In Houston, you can rub elbows with prominent sport figures, crazy astronauts and old money at restaurants downtown and yacht clubs on Clear Lake. It's a matter of taste. In Houston, live in the newly renovated downtown loft district or River Oaks for the best location. In Austin, head for the hills. It's a bit much for a day trip. Stay overnight at least. Traffic and cows and such tend to tie up the traffic, lol.

Austin is the supposed "art center" of Texas. It has the main Univesity campus, as well as the state capital and legislature. Its the center of "liberalism" in Texas, so if that particular political philosophy appeals to you, the Austin's your town.
San Antonio is gorgeous and a lot of fun, but in a tourist-y way.
Dallas is where I used to stay, and the business of Dallas is Business. If you are interested in making your fortune then Dallas is for you. Also tons of restaurants of every kind imaginable. Traffic is horrible in Dallas, but its probably worse in Houston and just as bad in Austin...

everyone is going to tell you about how great Austin is for creative people. and they are right.
Here's another view point. Your salary will be much less and you will be competing against an enormous pool of creative people. However, you would be happiest here.
