Absolutely they know who is on their back! And they can tell instantly whether you are experienced or not from the moment you sit your butt in the saddle. I'm not sure what you mean by protect but I have had horses that do everything they can to make sure you don't fall. And once when I did fall (the horse did a big, unexpected sideways spook) the horse stood stock still and held me up when I was trying not to pass out. I don't know if I would use the word "protect". I would probably be more apt to say that a horse who is treated well & ridden kindly & senstively will take good care of the rider.

I would think a horse would be able to tell who's riding it from the feel and smell of the person. That's why they are calm and stable for some and skittish for others. I think they have people they favor just like any other animal/pet. I'm not sure if it's in their instinct to protect. It's not what they were bred for. I believe they're more gentle and more calm when they care for someone....that's they're way of showing it.

Hi I am a horse trainer and yes horses know by your voice and your threw your way of riding who you are. Everyone rides different from leg pressure to how rough they are with the reins to how you sit in a saddle the horse feels it all.
if your horse is happy and hasn't tryed to buck you off then yes your horse loves you. as for protect you if you make a great bond with your horse then they will always protect you
if you fall off they will stop and stand next to you.that is true horse and rider bond.
happy trails!

Horses become pets just like a dog. They know you. They know your car even before you get out of the car. They get use to certain things that you do and it makes them get to know you. A good horse will step out wide around the barn and a bad horse will try to use the barn to rub you off. Teach them to step out from the barn and do not let them get away with bad habits. They are like children. They must be taught.
And a spoiled horse is a bad character.
