I would guess it's because it's brilliant, colourful, multifaceted and everchanging as well as being intimate and jewel-like. It also has a feeling of disparate elements colliding to create wonder ...the culture being made of many cultures (c;

It just an idea that the author of your book has to describe South Asia. It's not called that by most people.
