You don't have to use the pill or patch, you can use condoms, a diaphragm or the cup...
There is also the rhythm method, (Basil body temperature) which is used to see when you ovulate. This is a little more complicated but also a choice.
If you use birth control pills, I wouldn't use them over an extended period, short term use is fine.

Talk to your doctor first, your doctor should know most of the side affect to pills, they usually have a list in a book which they refer to. The most common side affect are listed. No one could let you if it will cause weight gain as each person's body reactions differently to a pill. It is a change you will have to take after talking to your doctor when the doctor recommend a particular pill ask for the side affect and another pill to see which one you prefer. They all have side affect unfortunately. Hope you find one to suit you as best you can.

Some forms of b/c have that effect on some women. I've been on the depo provera injection for over a decade and during that time I've been at my highest and lowest adult weights...I know when I gain weight it's because of what I put in my mouth, but I do think the depo makes it harder for me to lose (plus I'm over 40) so it's a struggle to get pounds off but I've always been able to do it, when I set my mind to it.
If you try a method and don't like it, switch to something else. I've stuck to the depo because it stopped my periods and that side effect alone has been worth it for me.

All hormonal birth control has mild weight gain as a possible side effect.
For most people it is manageable (and some do not experience it at all) , but if you have serious issues with weight gain, you might consider a non-hormonal birth control option.
