EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE:
Fred Thompson, an actor and former Tennessee senator, ended the suspense Thursday and said he'll declare his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination on Sept. 6.
Thompson said he'll make it official in a webcast and then tour Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. He'll also travel to Florida and home to Lawrenceburg, Tenn.
**It's about time. I will be watching closely to see if he can offer anything different than what these tired, warmed-over GOPers have.**

I think he will add more to the GOP base.
He will help engergize the South to go GOP.
He will also give the DNC heartburn which is always a good thing.

Here we go with the actor stuff again. To clarify this, conservatives don't have a problem with an educated actor running their mouths. It's the Sean Penn's and Rosie Odonnell's who between them have an IQ equivalent of a 3rd grader; then the media props them up and televises their every imbecile remarks as if they have something to say of value. All they have to do is call Bush an idiot and they instantly become political experts. Then they'll do an interview: Why did you say the president is an idiot? Because he's murdered...and on 9/11... on and on. The point is: Fred Thompson is a former senator/lawyer/statesman. The fact that he is also a successful actor only means this is a very talented man. He will easily win the Republican nomination.

Let's look at old Freddy boy. First he is lazy. He has taken way too long this year to make up his mind. I don't think I want a president that indecisive. Second, his record as a Senator is less than stellar. He was okay but nothing to write home about. Third, he has one heck of a lot of fund raising to do. Right now all the others can out spend him. Fourth, he was a lobbyist which is not someone I trust to run the country. Fifth, actor, Senator, lobbyist; does he really know what he wants to do or does he continue to be indecisive?

I was for Fred, but now I am thinking about Duncan Hunter because he has actually been active on trying to get a fence on the border completed and fighting NAFTA. If Fred wants in, then shouldn't he be at least speaking up strongly for conservative issues like this instead of remaining silent? I need to see SOMETHING!

He's getting annoying with his announcements of announcements.
He might be the perfect candidate for those conservatives who still want to believe the lies of the Bush administration and believe fox news and talk radio like it's scripture.Considering he's an actor and not a bad one from what I've seen he might be able to act the part for these less intellectual conservative Americans.I think he has a serious shot at taking the GOP nomination because of Giuliani's pro choice stand and the rest of the candidates really being second class except for Ron Paul. But Paul won't take it because he'll never get the support of the Bush supporters and pro war crowd.Let's hope he runs as an independent.
Thompson if nominated will loose the general election but he could be the best the GOP has to offer at this point.I also hear rumors he's a lazy guy and will not put in the work needed to run an effective campaign but that was said about Reagan too so who knows.
I don't think he can defeat the Clinton machine and again I think his main appeal is to the anti intellectual regressive right who put Bush in the white house

If he is the GOP candidate, he will win if the Democratic candidate is Clinton or Obama.
It's sad to say, but America doesn't seem capable of electing a woman or a minority to the presidency.
Plus, suburban moderates seem to get all weak-kneed over candidates who are able to effectively communicate the so-called Republican party platform. His acting talent will take him far in our superficial culture.

I don't really care, but I'm already sick and tired of the warmed over message of the democrats as they continue to march this nation toward socialism.

i think once true conservatives examine him closely he won't measure up to their expectations
While serving in the Senate he voted for the Partial-Birth Abortion Act of 2000. On a 1996 Christian Coalition survey, he handwrote, "I do not believe abortion should be criminalized."
Thompson said, that states should have "great leeway" in deciding whether to allow civil unions between gay partners..
