Probably Toyota.

They will soon overtake GM as the world's largest automaker (if they haven't already). This world popularity didn't happen by building junk.

Personally, I had a Honda, and it was a great car. It NEVER broke down the entire time I had it. I feel that Toyotas probably last longer though. You see elderly Toyotas driving around all the time. I rarely see old Hondas on the road. Hondas are great - I just don't think you'll get hundreds of thousands of miles out of one like you can a Toyota.

That said, I don't really care for asian cars. They may have great reliability, but the styling is always so generic. They tend to follow europe's lead, and regurgitate those designs. Japanese cars tend not to be very original - at least the ones sold in the USA. They to be very generic, and have very trendy styling features. I'd rather have something doesn't look like everyone else's car, and wont look old in 3 years.

If you think the support and warranty are important, Toyota would be good for you. Toyota has many service factories in Japan and their parts are relatively cheaper than other Japanese manufacturers.

If you think the quality of the build is more important, Subaru might be your choice.

Personally I like Honda's design (interior and exterior both).

Suzuki is selling inexpensive but safer car.

Daihatsu is the sister company of Toyota, so you can get good service.

What I don't recommend to you are Nissan and Mitsubishi.

Both companies do not provide good car and service in Japan any more. Unfortunately seems like many of their employee have lost their motivations and passions.

Toyota. Honda is pretty close behind. Honda used to be strong in technology while Toyota places emphasis on marketing. Eg, Honda came up with V-Tec years before Toyota came up VVT. They are basically the same concept, but Honda got there first. BTW, it was develop for F1, later used on NSX, and finally on lower end market like Civic & Integra. Recently, with the emergence of Hybrids, Toyota is back in the lead. Among Japanese auto-makers, Toyota has the widest variety of automobiles to date.

Toyota no doubt.

Someone tell Tahan92 that a Lexus is a Toyota...and Toyota manufactures most of the parts on a Daihatsu.
