In a spectrophotometer, you need a blank tube to set the machine at zero. It is a tube filled with water or a material that allows the light to go through. The field blank is used in the field and is not as accurate. A blank is used every time for accuracy.

Lab blank is much purer ( or more accurate in terms of conc.) than a field blank.
