i don't know i used to read it ho-ax because that's what i heard usually... but when i check it at dictionary.com the pronounciation is "hoks"..

hoks is correct.

Ho ax is something a woman of ill repute uses to cut down a tree I think.

It's one syllable with a long O - like hoe with a ks sound at the end, or hoeks.

I've never heard it said with two syllables or an ax sound
