I live in the UK and smoke roll-ups. I've noticed that people are really curious about this when I'm in the States so I guess it's not that common.

I know that when I was there 20 years ago friends told me that only ex-cons rolled their own and I found it really hard to get hold of decent rolling tobacco and papers. However, the last time I was there, 2 years ago, I found that we could buy large tins of organic 'American Spirit' rolling tobacco, so perhaps it's more accepted now.

It's certainly less bad for you than smoking all the crap in ready rolled!!

EDIT: No, Tigerfly, American Spirit is pure tobacco with no additives. I know this because I smoke it! You can't get the organic kind here in the UK, but you can get the regular kind and American Spirit ready rolled too.

What?? Some American smokers smoke roll ups, but tailoreds are far more popular. Where as is in the UK all petrol stations and supermarkets sell rolling tobacco, in the US you have to hunt around for it a bit. It's easier to buy from specific smoking peripherals shops.

You can't be so black and white - it's the same over here; some do some don't.

By the way, american spirit is a herbal smoke mix marketed as an alternative to tobacco for those who want to give up.

I'd say 95-99 percent of people buy regular cigarettes (in the US, where I live, anyway). I started rolling my own when the price of cigarettes went up and my income went down. It takes more time and effort to do that, though. But even then, I used the little machine with prerolled filtered papers, so I didn't actually 'roll' my own.

Roll up tend to be more popular with the people who are on a fixed income. It is also popular among the "people with out homes" population I live in West Virginia and I see more of the roll up that the tailor made I personally don't like to roll my own but can if I have to

Sometimes we do. You can still get Bugler
and rolling papers, and they are less money
than buying cigarettes from the store already
made
But if a cop catches you with rolling papers
they think you have been smoking ganga.

Both. Most people buy cigs at the store. Smoking is not allowed many places so it is hard to notice who does what.
