A great many of the small town I know of are Hell-bent on destroying themselves with downtown "modernization" projects and "urban renewal". There is a small town near here which heavily advertises their "historic" downtown, but has pretty much allowed all their main historic buildings to be levelled for failed "upscale" developments. Most of these developments remain empty and contribute nothing to the downtown they deface. Small towns like this are destroying themselves with their own stupidity. They dont need any help from Wal-Mart.
If people are so concerned about Wal-Mart, then DONT SHOP THERE! Go to the little independant places. I have noticed that even if the prices are a little higher than the big-box stores, they contribute more to the community and have better quality goods than Wal-Mart. Many of Wal-Mart's vendors have lower-quality goods they stock specially for Wal-Mart so they can meet the pricing Wal-Mart demands. Put your money where your concerns are.

I like having choices, its part of being a American. Its not supported by 90% of americans, but it does alot of business.
It can in some cases have dire effects on small businesses in small towns, then again some small towns support their local shops and co-exist with walmart. The choice is up to each individual

I love our wal-mart, it's only 6 minutes from our house and has been there a long time.
What has dissappointed me is that when we moved to this small town, it was mainly farm land and country, the reason we moved out to the county, for that peace and quiet and country tranquility.
But in the past 2 years we have seen 2 j.c. penny's get built, 3 restaurants a strip mall and another being built right opposite?? a home depot, lowes, a mega center and 6 fast foods chains, one just opened as you turn out of our street.
They are all competing and it's horrible.
Opposite our house was a lovely stretch of about 22 acres that we planned to rent and put horses on and just before we went to go talk to the water company about it, they sold it to someone who is building 2 shops and what right now looks like a restaurant - well
there goes the neighborhood!
So much for peace and quiet huh!
I prefer wal-mart though, i can get everything under one roof!

I have seen Wal-mart come into small towns and offerring people lower prices. Yes some businesses did shut down.
My question to you do you always shop the most expensive places just to keep them going?
I happen like the idea of lower prices but you don't please explain.
Why do you guys pick on Wal-Mart?
Is it Wal-Mart or is it a case you don't like the idea of them being non-union.

Although I do shop at WalMart, I find too many are popping up and taking over small towns! Maybe we should just call what we have good enough and leave it at that!

It is my believe that Wal-Mart's mega growth will be the death of them someday.
