You need to start off in a very quiet setting where there are few distractions. You could have soft, instrumental music playing in the background (not rock but something soothing). YOU need to sit comfortably but not TOO comfortably.
To start off with, try to not think about anything at all. Shut down the internal dialog in your mind. When you have achieved that, allow ONLY the one thing that you wish to think about enter your mind and allow THAT to be the ONLY thing in your mind.
It takes some practice and time to master but once you do you'll find that you can do it easier and easier each time you do this. It's called meditating and is a very effective way to find solutions to the problems of the day.
Brightest Blessings,

Close your eyes, think of the thought, your mind will go in a million directions, it will seem like hours have gone by.Bring yourself back gently to the idea, re[eat this and eventually it will allow you to better focus on iy. When you achieve some orderly thinking and look up, you'll see only a few minutes have gone by, you will fel relaxed, This will help concentration and memory

Try writing about the thing, putting ideas about the thing on a tape or CD and listening to it, hanging out with people that only talk about that thing, read about the thing etc.
Thinking ONLY about one thing for a period of time is challenging. Trying asking yourself questions about the thing and writing down the answers as well.
If you do those you will start to focus on whatever thing it is you are thinking about.

Become a mindless slave to an evil overlord. The downside is you only think about doing whatever that evil overlord says, which gets dull after 5 minutes.
I, myself, think roughly a million random thoughts per second. You might think it's amazing I haven't gone insane yet... Or have I? You're the man now, dog.

Of course I do focus my thoughts on one thing exclusively.
I am not scatter-brained like some folks!!!
What was the question?
