Murray you're right!
Guys there are things to be liberal about and there are things to be conservative about. Each issues at hand is different.
So you cannot glue yourself to one side.
People hate thinking so the easy way out is sticking, on one side.

Actually Libs. usually don't use either term unless its the only choice. They would, in most cases, refer to Cons as with some issue related term. Ex. Unions might use Slave Driver. But it will almost always have some implication that Cons are forcing their moral values on them. Libs don't all necessarily like the idea of gay marriage, for example, or abortion. They just don't think it's any of their business, unless its they themselves making that choice for themselves.
Cons, on the other hand, see pretty much everything as black or white, with no gray in the middle. Its not Right Wing & Left Wing. Its Rt.
Wing & Wrong Wing. Opposing any issue make you a lib. Or, in the words of the most prominent
Con, RUSH, if your stance on issues is mixed (MOD), then you stand for nothing. An ex. would be when GWB states that if you're against the war, you're don't support our troops or this country.
Thats Unpatriotic, and we don't want you here.
So you're correct that both groups label. Cons. call all that oppose them Libs. But Libs, I observe
are a bit more specific when labeling Cons.

Just plain lazy.
Issues are much more complex.
Thinking people don't fall all on one side or the other on every single issues.
Too many people are just too afraid to be alone so the Liberal/Conservative monikers group them for support.
Being honest with yourself, and articulating your position takes thoughtful work. There are those of us who will follow the path of least resistence and adopt the label so as to be liked by at least one side or the other and not have to run the risk of confronting everybody.
Summing it up in one word.......'BORING'

Really? You HATE Labels? So you wear "Stangler jeans"?
"NILE" footwear ("Just Swim It")
Labels are very limiting to one's choices. An attempt to label is an attempt to pigeonhole someone or something into a pre-conceived little niche. It denies independance, free thought, and innovation.

I get labeled as an extreme-leftist, liberal tree-hugging commie quite often (not on here. ).
After awhile you generally get used to it, although it does take a bit to get all the stick-to-the-opposite-view point off.

Its not the labels so much as it is the definitions that are provided by the opposition views.

I think these labels just show which way you lean. I lean liberal and I'm not ashamed to say it. Proud to be a tree hugger.
