It really depends on the bank and your relationship with them. Is this YOUR check we are speaking of? Someone made it out to you incorrectly? I would say contact the issuer to see if it can be corrected immediately - If a different check can be written. Or contact your bank, talk to a teller or the local bank branch manager. Let them know who you are, how long you've had your account with them and tell them ' before i drive down there to deposit it, I'm concerned with how my name was written on it' See what they say? They may give a manager approval based on your account history. I was a teller for several years, and people who had been with the bank many years, had a good history, sufficient balance, etc were made exceptions. another factor in this may be if you are depositing or cashing. A misspelled check might not be ok to swap right to cash but they may allow it to go through processing for deposit and next day withdrawl.

The collecting bank has a duty to ensure the payee on the cheque is the same as the account holder. Unless the collecting bank is negligent, you will not be able to encash it.

Can't rightly say just what your bank will do, however I had a cheque with my first name totally wrong and my last name partially wrong. Bank wouldn't let me cash it but accepted it as deposit into my account. Had a few cheques with my last name spelt totally wrong but in all cases the cheque cleared ok. Sometimes its not your bank but the other person's. I reckon you'll be ok.

If the check is intended for you, simply deposit it. If someone notices, (and the clearing is all automated so that should not be a problem) simply say "Well, they still haven't fixed my name have they? Initial the wrong name or write Lorna above it. Alternately, you can sign the check as Laura and countersign it as Lorna. If you are concerned and they notice, ask if you should correct it or countersign it (don't suggest taking it back for reissue - they may say it.)

I think you can cash it, indicate your complete name, address and call no. at the back of the check. Aside from your 2 valid IDs, the bank may ask other documents to prove your real identity

You should contact whoever wrote the check and have them re-issue it. You don't want to take any chances.
