Softwood cuttings are collected any time the tree is actively growing. Hardwood cuttings of willow can be collected anytime after leaf drop from November to March. Keep your cuttings to 7-10" in length. Remove any leaves and the soft growth tip. Make a angled cut just above the top bud and a flat cut below the bottom bud. Place them immediately into the ground. Sure, you can put them in water and they will grow roots, but why bother with this intermediate step when you can put them directly into the ground and they will grow roots as well? You will not need any rooting hormone nor do you need to nick the bark with willows. Just plant them where you want them to grow.

Yes, you can transplant a willow. Its best to do this when they are dormant.

In the spring cut some foot long pieces and put in a jar of water in the house . When the roots are one or two inches long put them in the soil and keep moist the first year .
A word of caution - they grow extremely fast and the roots will cause trouble by lifting up your neighbors patiostones - it happened to me. I had to cut mine down for that reason. They were 30 feet high and less than 12 years old. in the spring time you will get a mess with catkins dropping off for two or three weeks.Plant them at least 20 feet from any building or walkway. Good luck

I have done this. Willow will readily root on its own with no need for rooting hormone. I wrapped a small bundle of branches at one end with moist sphagnum moss. Then wrap it in plastic wrap to keep it moist. Keep it moist in a cool, dark place. You should have roots in 2-3 weeks. -Brian

Willow roots in water. Sure you can move one, takes a bit of digging.
