Humans are making the planet a lot worse. If we all disappeared it is likely that earth would be far better off. Pollution and development would come to a standstill and the Earth would finally get a chance to recycle all the toxins we've thrown at it. Species that were brought down by us (pretty much all of them) will thrive again and the air would be cleaner than it's been in decades if not centuries.

There has been a recent buzz of activity in the scientific community of just this question. Scientific American offers a video showing the progression of the world as nature takes over, including the dissolution of civilizations remains, and the eventual restoration of the atmospheric balances to pre-human times.

It would be a better place. Seriously. The world would probably "recycle" itself. Global warming would disappear, endangered animals and plants would flourish again. Unfortunately, we've done a lot of damage.
