Nothing wrong is on their part in asking your holiday plans in advance because they have to arrange their working force in a planned manner in order to maintain non-interruption in achieving their goals. The company may also think to grant concessions or paid holidays to the employees in a rotation manner. The employees will not forego anything if they inform their holiday plans in advance.

No you are not obliged to tell them. However it is a common courtesy. They are just looking for the employees to tell them when they will be off and when they will be there so they make sure they have coverage on those days.

Most companies would soon be out of business if they had a span of 3 to 4 business days surrounding each holiday where they could not operate.
