If you really want to be effective you should do normal pushups instead of bending your knees. Also to add some variance to your workout you can change your arm positioning to work different parts of your chest. For example doing pushups with your arms closer together works the central portion of your pectoralis (chest muscle) a little more and having your ams further apart works the outer portion of your pec closer to your armpit.
The key to gaining strength in any muscle is to work it. Some people advocate exercising the muscle until you can't do anymore. This can be effective but also lead to extreme soreness, especially if you don't work out on the regular. This soreness will go away if you start working your muscles out on the regular though. I would say see how many pushups you can do in a row without stopping, then do a few reps of either that or a few less than that. When you feel like you may not be able to do anymore then stop. Then you can either try again later in the day or the next day if you like.
I hope this helps

Do as many as you can until muscle failure twice a day. When you get to over 150 in 2 minutes try other exercises.
