If you're in the UK, you can just do it. It's a big headache if you've got bank accounts, utility bills, mortgage etc., but quite straightforward. You just tell everyone your new identity and you're the new you (provided you aren't doing it to defraud people etc, which puts you foul of other laws). You could formalise your name change by Deed Poll, which will convince people like the Passport Office that you are who you claim to be. See the link below.

It's quite simple and legal in the UK as mentioned just tell everyone you know you have changed your name and you are away.

If you wish to apply for Passports/Driving License etc you will have to change your name by deed poll at your local registry office.

Another way which is highly illegal is to steal someone else's identity.

There was a case recently of a woman who had set up 100's of false identities in order to claim benefits.

She simply scoured graveyards as someone already mentioned and also managed to get details of people who had recently emigrated as their identities were unlikely to be used that often in this country.

She then applied for their birth certificates as anyone can do this legally.

Once she had got the birth cert she was up and running as the flawed security of establishments like the government, banks etc accept a birth certificate as proof of identity. She was able to get National Insurance numbers, set up bank accounts and claim benefits no problem.

I should point out that both the government and banks are now very hot on this and this woman did get caught and is now doing serious time for identity theft and fraud.

you can't legally do that. if you are a witness of a crime, the government could put you in a witness protection program and do that, but only then.. you can legally change your name though. But not your social security number. to do the name change you go to your local courthouse and they will explain
