Emancipation from ego and subjectivity. We achieve this effortlessly during our extremely happy moments... in fact concentration or devotion too helps through dissipation of self into an object or objective.... and that is what meditation is all about. Perhaps the highest level of meditation involves converting the subject-self into an object-self thus detaching ourselves from our own self.

Define Self Transcendence

It's complete non-attachment (no judgment regarding what's "good" attachment vs. "bad" attachment - aim is for no attachment.) The basic theory about "is there a self?" in most branches of Buddhism is that there is no unchanging self, no part that remains the same but we make that mistake, thinking we are our opinions, our bodies, our thoughts, our past histories, genetics, our intellect, whatever. This is what causes us to feel separate from all that is - everyone, everything - and gives rise to the belief in duality. The "insight" in insight meditation isn't "insight" like it's thought of in psychology. It's insight into the constant change of everything. True recognition of this allows transcendence of the ego.

It is the effect produced by something which is other than one's self, and which is higher than oneself. When you look up at it you wont feel your own ego.Your ego becomes powerless and transcended by that other thing. For a great nature lover looking at the rainbow would for a moment render the ego absent.
Self-transcendence is a great spiritual experience.

i would say its more going beyond a prior form or state of oneself, this is a common current definition
it often refers to spiritual development
its at the top of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, though he felt that people can reach out and experience self-transcendence at all levels of the scale, it did not have to follow self -actualization
there are also concepts that some are born with more ability for this, a gift, especially when you are applying it to the spiritual part of the self

Rising above the self & everything that implies. To no longer see yourself as the center of your world, to know it's just not always about just you. To have expanded your understanding of self to include others so that loving, doing, & caring for others is as important as self because literally others are you also. To know that in joining with others you don't lose yourself, you save yourself & your brother. To know that together we make up something far beyond the sum of our parts. To no longer judge your brother or yourself by the outer stuff, being able to look past the illusion to their reality. To know we are all in this together in a way few can imagine, & live that Truth.
