We are looking to remove an existing gas fire, We are not on the mains but use bottled gas for the fire and also our central heating. We then want to replace with a log burner which we already have. How do we go about it and how much will it cost. I would guess that the fire place will need opening up and swept but that is as much as I know. Any help would be appreciated.

You will need a chimney liner fitted into the existing stack and this could cost as much as £800 to fit. If you use it without a liner you will get a build up of tar that can cause a chimney fire. If you decide to go ahead I would get three quotes, or you can do it yourself for about £90 if you don't mind heights!!

If you are within the UK it is an offence to remove or pamper with any gas appliences, you must employ a registered engineer to remove the gas fire, You say you have a log burner you can have your log burner in the middle of your living room as long as you have a flue from the fire to the outside You are not bound by your fire place.

The cost may depend on what work you may have to do.Some wood burning fires have a back boiler to heat the water some dont, if the one you have as a back boiler then the cost will be in the pipe work to your radiators which means you may need to get a plumber in to do the work.

Don't 1. You will never return the cost of the log burner. 2. You will get bored with cutting and preparing wood/coal for the fire. 3. All the mess!!!!! These things need cleaning out daily virtually. 4. At least an hour before you get any useful heat. 5. I don't think you realise the amount of wood it will burn to produce the same amount of heat as a gas fire. 6. No lounging about on the settee expect to be getting up every 15minutes or so to put more wood on the fire. People like the idea but when it comes down to it people are too lazy to do the work. Personally I have better things to do with my time than cut wood and clean out fires.

You don't say where you live, but there are codes to consider. the way gas and wood burning fireplaces are made in the U.S. is quite different. Check into the codes, and have a qualified contractor at least look at it to find out what will be involved. Good luck.

1st get a corgi registered gas engineer to remove your fire and all the gas pipe work to a safe distance from your fireplace.

Then as mentioned above get a liner fitted.

alot of fireplace places out there that can do the work for you.
