I am sorry there is no short answer.
Watch a flock of birds as they all turn together in the air in perfect flight. This is more then just instinct going on here.
Humans are the only beings here that don't use this ability to it's fullest extent.
In some parts of Africa Aborigines communicate 3 to10 miles using this age old method.
My Wife and I are both clairvoyant. Many people are. In my younger days I learned that some people have trouble controlling it or turning it off. For this problem they had to be trained. We were very lucky in light of the fact that we have always been able to turn it on and off.
Hollywood has made a lot of money with it's T.V. series and movies using this subject. Truth is it's really not that big of a deal. Everybody does it, but it is not taught in school or church. Have you ever known what some one else was going to do or say before they did? Has someone else known what you were going to do or say before you did it?
Well that's all it is my friend. You were just never taught to look at it that way. If you put as much time into the practice of this as you have other things in your life think how good you would be at it by now. Like everything else it just takes time.

Yes, I have experienced this between me and my daughter. Many times she calls up to convey something and she calls and convey the same what all I was thinking to tell her, may be going for a movie or any other plan. OR may be some decision on something, I think this is called telepathy. Many times it is is like she can read my mind or I must have read her mind, it really surprises. Acutally according to me when you know someone really well then this telepathy technology appears in the human beings.

When you live with someone long enough, it happens all the time. Familiarity. But from a stranger, no I haven't experienced that.

..receiving thoughts?, hmmm it's just like talking but of course u need focus and concentration. i tried it once but it was too difficult.
