Especially since the religious conservatives claim that the bible condemns gays to hell.

Also, do gay priests adhere to the concept of celibacy?

And how do they cope facing a congregation that may be anti-gay?

Would love to hear from priests / ex-priests / public at large

As a gay man and an ordained priest ( CofE) it can be difficult being gay In the church of england, straight priests can marry and have kids, but gay men have a much harder time of things, i mean there is one school of thought that says and I quote, if you are not a practisning homosexual then it's ok to be a priest, however if you a a practicing homosexual then you have problems. I don't hold with the idea of practicing or non practicing, either you are gay or not.I have a partner, whom I married in a civil ceremony this year--I wasn't allowed to in the church, but it is legal. I don't wear my sexuallity on my sleave, it is what and who I am, but I also don't hide when someone asks me the age old question, are you ect ect. I't a fact of life I'm gay so what.

I have known some priests who because they are gay have been forced to leave their chosen job.but and this is the crunch, not all of those in high places within the church have a problem with gay preists, so long as the job gets done it doesn't matter if the preist is gay or straight.

To make a point a gay friend, who also happens to be a preist said " according to our faith god made us all" not just straight or gay but all of us.

I am of the opinion that if you are happy with your life and you do your best in your chosen line of work then what is the problem, unfortunetly it is the minority that give the rest of us a bad reputation, straight or gay,, so I suppose I am saying treat everyone the same, as a person and not as someone who has a different sexual preference to you.

In the end it comes down to choice, do we get on or not, regrettably too few are making the second option.

I think they consider it a moot point since they are required to be celibate. I'm sure straight priests have worldly desires, but they're still allowed to be priests. I heard a 'gay' priest on the radio talking about this subject, and I think that's basically what he said. He didn't point the finger at straight priests, though, I added that. Sorry I can't remember who it was.

Most priests are celibate whether they are straight or gay. Some priests, both straight and gay, have sex lives. Being gay does not counter any rules in Christianity. You are allowed to find anyone attractive and love anyone. The rule for priests is celibacy. That applies to all of them. If the priest is celibate, his sexual orientation matters not.

I saw a documentary about it. Priests are supposed to be celibate, but many aren't. Quite a few have secret relationships (gay and straight) on the side, and others use pornography. They all find a way to justify it to themselves.

Oh great question. I knew a priest who, on his death bed, hung on until a friend [a catholic priest/pope] came to give him the last rites. This man, the one that died, had openly admitted to all sorts of sexual behaviour with his young choirboys in the past and was absolutely TERRIFIED of dying. Makes you wonder doesn't it.

I think they're more clever and they know that God loves us all and that being gay or not won't lead you to hell.

That would be an awful situation, I imagine that they would try to deny their sexuality? I don't know.
