Well the palio is the best looking car there, for me at least. Fiat are commited to the Indian market and it seems likely they will remain unless something unexpected happens-like a recession. However I would agree that Fiat's dealer service has been ropey. TATA's dealer service isn't much better. Looking at just the cars, the Fiat has the quickest engine (in 1.6 trim), the indica is the roomiest. The palio also comes out top for interior style and quality. Overall, purely judging o the cars themselves the palio is the best car, followed by the indica. However as you say the santo and wagon r boast greater fuel economy and a strong reputation for quality, also the dealer will probably be nicer. It depends what you want from a car. For ease of ownership go for the wagon r, but for fun go for the palio, if you need space go for the indica. I would probably go for the palio if the dealer was nice and local. Also before you buy anything the Fiat grande punto is scheduled for release in 2008. This is a very good car that has wowed Europe, and a better car than any of the aforementioned models. It will cost about 4.5 lacs. And have you considered the Maruti Swift? another very good car

I'd stand against the Fiat as this is not a popular vehicle and you would find it difficult it getting parts easily and resale value is very bad.
Regarding Interior space the Indica is a good vehicle and regarding fuel this uses diesel and is economically feasible in regular use. However the riding comfort in this vehicle is not good enough as in the Santro or Wagon R.
The new Wagon R is better than the current Santro that it has some new features and the new ones come with a dual fuel tanks.
The Santro is a good vehicle for a normal use.
My personal ranking for these vehicles considering most of the features would be as follows:
1. Santro and Wagon R (I use both these vehicles and can hardly decide between which is better)
2. Indica
3. FIAT

The mention hatchbacks are really nice in their own little ways, but when you turn pages in car magazines of the past 3 yrs you will notice that in all of the hatchback competitions or test drives the overall winner is Santro xing.
You may be personally inclined towards the palio stile, but with a cut down engine size here are few of its problems:
1.slower acceleration
2.more fuel consumption as you will have to rev the engine harder
3.lesser engine life
4.really unreliable servicing network(I mean the Tata's can't look after their own cars what can they do about FIAT???)
Mind you it doesn't exactly look that damn gorgeous(sorry for shattering ur dreams, but this is true)
The Indica XETA
1.the lower models don't even get an HVAC(even the alto lx gets that ~2.7lacs,cheaper than XETA).
2.with its swooping nose you have to constantly keep guessing where the bonnet ends(lot of scrapes on the front end of the car,a real pain to park the car)
3.drive for 20000kms and I'm sure u'll notice the part starting to rattle and some things like the switches even come off!!
5.try cornering at high speeds and you will feel the body roll(results in skidding out of control and eventually accidents)
4.God help you with its servicing network problems if u buy it
The only good thing that its got is its spaciousness, apart from that its got a bit more torque, but its weight makes it slow and poor on mileage.
The Wagon R
Its a good car,
1.decent mileage
2.Real good body balance (ie a good stability while negotiating sharp turns)
3.cheap parts
4.Good servicing network
5.the option of drving on a cheaper fuel(only on the wagon-r duo)
6.The gear box is a long throw,(ie more effort required in shifting gears, tiring to drive in the cities).
The Santro XING:
1.A good engine.
2.slam the accelerator(no need to floor) and you can feel the torque(less gear changes, transmission lasts for long time)
3.the gear is a short throw one, less effort in shifting the gears.
4.a rigid suspension setup that allows you to corner and brake faster without jeopardising ur life.
5.Ain't got more space than the palio or the xeta, but surely more than the wagon-r.
6.mileage is good(10-12 kms/ltr in city,16+ kms/ltr on highways)
7.The servicing network is good, they offer things like free monsoon checkups and things like that, where they also replace ur wiper blades, rotate the tire positions without labour costs.
8.The car is a trouble free vehicle, best for city driving.
9.Its got a high bonnet line so u don't have too guess for the front end of the car. Also u can have a greater road presence than other mentioned hatches.
The Santro is a good car,I will personally suggest you to test drive the mentioned cars,to get the feel of the individual cars.
Here's my ranking:
1.Santro Xing
2.Wagon-r
3.Palio Stile
4.Indica Xeta
By the way here's something you should know no matter what car you buy please adhere to these small details they add to the value u spent to get the car,Don't let drivre drive the vehicle for 1st 2000 Kms.U drive it yourself and carefully and slowly this will help in the future mileage of the vehicle.

If you really want a choice between
1.Indica and Palio
Go in for Indica...
Plus -- Spacious, Rugged and well suited for Indian Roads
Decent Mileage , Decent service
But if you give a choice between santro xing and WagonR
I will suggest you to take Wagon R
PLUS -- Its a Maruti Silly
Mileage,Great Resale, Great Service,Pretty Decent Performance
Minus : Space but its a plus too
Less space for parking and handling...
My Choice : Wagon R

Following are my perferences.
1. Maruti Swift - best driving comfort both in City and Highway
2. Maruti Wegon-R
Note: Maruti has best service and parts are cheaper (in case you need repair)
3. Indica Xeta
I'll not consider Santro/Santro Xing or PalioStile.

People seeking better understanding will find it, but they will have to wade through a lot of misinformation and disinformation. There are a number of people who honestly share correct information, but there are also a number of people who are here to merely entertain themselves and annoy others. If you truly want better understanding and can stay around long enough to determine who is who, you will come to a better understanding. I don't think it helps to define the rift that exists anywhere because the rift seen here is usually false. There are legitimate disagreements, but there are also many who create a rift that does not exist by posing as something that they are not. So, the rifts here tend to be artificial.
