Absolutely right on. We do our good deeds because they build our self pride (ego) and that makes us feel good. But if we see it that way, then it all goes up in smoke. Our human capacity for self deception often comes to the rescue and keeps us from seeing the truth.
Your capacity for self deception must be a little low. Go see Brad arm pit (above) for he seems to have extra.

every thing has its opposite. If you do good to someone, you do bad to the other one.
Truth can hurt you but makes you feel better. Lies can save you if you have no conscience.
Trying to be good/truth can help others even we lose are pride.

None of us are perfect. These are awesome questions and show that you're using consideration. As long as you aren't selfish and you make an effort to be considerate, goodness can come to everyone. We need to keep the goodness flowing and questioning our motives occasionally.

hahahaha! excellence!
most people these days will tell you pride is a good thing, it sparks competition and whatnot.
but it also accounts for pretty much everything wrong in the world today.
excellent question though, can we as humans avoid pride?
absolutely not.
