Errr caution here !
The mic input on most PC's also sends OUT to the microphone a small DC voltage that is used by the commonly used "electret condenser" mics that are classed as PC microphones, either stand alone or in headset & mic combos.
The coil in a decent hi-fi microphone will be deflected somewhat by ths DC voltage and may -
A, spoil the performance or
B, damage it.
So, when buying this microphone, I suggest you get a decent Hi-Fi "electret condenser type and NOT a coil type (usually refered to as "Dynamic microphones").
Electret condenser microphones can be easily identified if there is any doubt because they have a little battery in them and "Dynamic" ones do not.

Most of the times a Hi Fi microphone will work in a PC. It's all about the quality of the recording you require. Generally speaking the PC microphones are relatively cheap thus we might achieve better results using a Hi Fi microphone. Some dynamic Hi Fi microphones may not operate correctly when you plug them into your audio card. Case you already have the microphone you can plug it and try it. If you plan to buy a new microphone then there is no easy answer. There is always the case that a Hi Fi microphone might not have the required results. I know for sure that many Hi Fi microphones clearly mention that they are PC compatible. The best solution is to check the instructions and verify that you can use the microphone both into a Hi Fi and into a PC.

It will work if you have the right plug. This assumes that your sound card has a microphone input. If you've only got a line input, you need a preamp with any kind of microphone.

You need the right plug, but a microphone is a microphone.
