I think if a guy is going to break a whole bunch of laws using a gun in the first place, he won't mind breaking one more law by either being in posession of an illegal firearm or being in posession of a firearm illegally.
All the legalese in the world won't bring back the people that have been killed by someone in illegal posession of a firearm. What good is one more law going to do?

As Benjamen Franklin once said, "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. "
In other words, if you don't have enough of a spine to live in freedom, you will die in slavery.
I much prefer to stay free and am willing to fight and die to so.
Honestly there are not that many federal laws pertaining to firearms but in some states there are numerous restrictive laws that are silly. Places like Washing DC for instance. One poster mentioned more Americans dying in DC than in Iraq and that is fact is true. But DC has incredibly strict gun laws that have only left the law abiding defenseless while the criminals simply pick and choose their targets. GUN LAWS DO NOT REDUCE CRIME!!!
If you want to reduce crime. start with stricter punishment. Then try working on the values, morals and attitude of society. That is the problem, not a inanimate object.
Gun control is the answer of the simple minded.

I think gun laws are just fine the way they are. For those of you who don't think that the 2nd amendment guarantees us the right to keep and bear arms, you're the ones who are misinterpreting the amendment. The Supreme Court already ruled, that in the Constitution, the words 'The People' refer to the rights of the individual not the rights of the state. It was also ruled that people have rights, governments have powers and authority, but never rights.

I believe they need to be done away with. At least, all federal gun laws should be abolished and the BATFE needs to be done away with and left up to each individual state as what to do. Nowhere in the Consitution does it give the federal government the power to restrict firearms, but it does prohibit it in the Second Amendment. Besides, if the gun laws we have actually worked Washington D.C. would be the safest place to live. And if you look at history it is the law-abiding citizen that gets hurt by these laws everytime. Somehow the criminals always seem to get their hands on guns.

Americans have a right to own guns.
But it is always surprising to see the number of people n Y/A, who, apparently getting their information from the radical right, say that the 2nd amendment provides the legal basis for owning a gun.
It does not. The second amendment says that the state in which you live can call you up for military service and you may have to provide your own weapon.
Americans right to own firearms is far broader than the 2nd amendment discussion. It is the same as their right to own any other goods or services that are legal to sell and to own.
Current gun laws, a product of the gun lobby, are in my opinion a little lose. I would think that a demonstration of proficiency similar to that required to get a driver license would be required.
Gun owners at the very least should know how to clean and maintain the weapon and should know the basics about safe handling of ammunition.
While the laws are a little lose, I personally can live with them.

Completely stupid. Look at how many thousands of people die from being shot every year there. Too many afraid, paranoid and pent up people in the USA - they don't need guns if noone else has guns so take them all away. Here in Australia we do just fine without the public owning guns. Have you seen the movie doco Bowling For Columbine about their gun obsession and fearfulness? It's really interesting.

I think that .. it is their nation ... so I don't REALLY have a right to pass comment,........
just as I believe some wankerish NRA-people have NO right to pass comment on our australian gun laws.
BUT my own personal view is .. well how more simply can I put it when I say .. I would prefer to live in AU with OUR laws.

I read a staistic somewhere recently that more people are shot in Washington than in Iraq. I don't know that it's true but if it indicates that there is a problem with US gun laws

In Tasmania Australia in the 1980's a mentally unstable man decided that the owners of a shop had cheated his dead mother.
Hehad a gun that repeats - you know can fire lots of bullets.
He went to the shop.
A tourist bus arrived
The man shot over 30 tourists including lots of children.
The Australian public were shocked
The prime-minister, Howard, who I do not always agree with did a MAGNIFICENT thing.
Before the week was over laws were bought banning all guns that could shoot lots of shots.
Even the police were banned from having them.
Only single shot or 6 shot guns were allowed even by farmers who wanted pest control.
How to stop the guns in possesion
Howard decided on a 'BUY-BACK'
Millions of tax-payers money was spent buying back guns.
The poulation were glad and voted Howard back at the next election.
I am PROUD, LUCKY etc to live in a country which while not perfect does NOT have a major gun problem
Students do not have to go through metal detevtors at school.
Police can not go on rampages
We do not have drive-by shootings
Your gun rights came when guns could only shoot six at a time, and were not made to allow possible killing of hundreds
Your religion says "You shall not kill"
You have no right to impose your will on others so have no right to kill in any way.
Guns are dangerous especially in the hands of human beings.
Every person has a right to life
Even felons/thieves can have value
In the 1700's felons/thieves were seen as evil.
So they sent a whole heap officially to Australia and now we have a wonderful country
A whole heap of felons went to America and it was mostly descendants of felons who began your war of Independance. Of course they wanted guns but it's a good thing they only had six-shooters or there would be no U.S.A.
