My mind is always going. It's always thinking about something, it never shuts down and its driving me nuts. It's keeping me from living the life I want to live. How can I train my brain to tune out all the little, unimportant thoughts that creep to my attention and only focus on me living out the life I was meant to live?

This is called single minded focus and is not an easy task.

Meditation is an exercise for the mind to help you achieve this state. When you meditate daily then you find it easier to focus on tasks during the day.

Think of it like this.
A musician practices EVERYDAY to train his body and mind to achieve a specific task. Then, when he is called on to PERFORM, he is able to do so with out too much thinking, because it has become second nature to him.

Practice, practice, practice. Or in your case.
Meditate, meditate, meditate.

I think it's because that you are most of the time anxious and you worry too much about the smallest details which kinda makes you a perfectionist. Am I correct? First, you need to eliminate the things that is unnecessary. G.I.G.O. - Garbage In, Garbage Out. It will take a lot of effort for you to get used to this, but the point is, you are willing to make a small step and do whatever it takes to preserve your sanity. Upon waking up in the morning, what do you think about and why? What are the factors that trigger a barrage of uncontrollable thoughts? you have to find the very root of the problem and avoid any situation that could trigger an overreactive mental activity. One common nature of people like you is constantly worrying about tomorrow or what will happen if I don't do this or fear of being rejected, etc. It could be a lot of various things and could lead to a worse kind of anxiety attack if left unchecked. Acutally, you could be having one now and you just don't know it. The environment that you are in can trigger your thoughts and affect your emotions in turn, leading to unwanted stress and sleepless nights, right? So, when your mind starts going on automatic again, just inhale and exhale while closing your eyes and try to think of relaxing thoughts like you are in the beach and you could actually hear the waves crashing to the shore. Continue inhaling and exhaling until your heartbeat and breathing slows down. Do this as much as you could until any stressful thoughts have been eliminated. Most of all, try avoiding caffeinated drinks like Coke or coffee that could contribute to your problem. Are you taking any medications? like any Anti-depressive drug maybe? any medications can have several side-effects and is different from person to person. You could also keep yourself busy by doing things that interest you the most. Of course try engaging in relaxing hobbies like fishing, painting or listening to relaxing music or even sports. Exercise has a generally good effect on the body as it releases endorphins ( feel-good chemicals), after going to the gym and lifting some weights, you'll be so tired to even think when your birthday is and hit the sack once you get home. If the same problem persists, better see a doc. I hope I have helped you in some way.
