Hi,
I think the answer strongly depends on personality types too. For instance some people thrive on risk, adventure, excitement whereas some are happy in their regular routines, with familiar people, in familiar places.
Risk and fear ... some will do anything to avoid both. People might avoid the unknown because they feel they won't be able to handle the outcome. And yet every step we take forward into our future IS taking us to the unknown. None of us truly knows what lies ahead. The unknown is everywhere and in every decision: having another baby, starting a new job, moving house. There are many justifiable reasons for fearing the unkown; none of us want to wreck our lives or the lives of our loved-ones. But we must also face up to our fears and take a few risks. How else do we move on?

Fear of the unknown is an intense fear of something that poses little or no actual danger. While adults with fear of the unknown realize that these fears are irrational, they often find that facing, or even thinking about facing, the feared situation brings on a panic attack or severe anxiety.

magine what your life will be like when you know that you are not "defective". When you can be confident and at ease in situations where you used to feel your fear of the unknown. And when you can talk about your former fear of the unknown symptoms as though you are describing a movie where the character is someone else, not you.

To sum up, fear of the unknown can severely disrupt normal life, interfering with school, work, or social relationships.

cheers :)

Good question.... if we do not know something, there is obviously no definite reason to either fear it or love it.... so indeed it is questionable what makes us fear the unknown!!

I think we fear the unknown only because we want to explore it.... if we chose to ignore or avoid it and let it just be, there may not be that fear. Since we want to explore it or know it, we realize the uncertainty that in the process we may as well come to harm. As a result, we fear it as well as we want to know it or explore it.... fear is basically a defense mechanism in our being and it gets activated primarily for us to be cautious while exploring the unknown. This entire process (of wanting to know it or explore it and at the same time feeling fear in order to be cautious for avoiding any harm) happens quite subconsciously in our mind.

Well just a thought that looks plausible to me.

We fear the unknown because it is a change from what we know now. For most people, change is a frightening concept. The 'known' is security.

Personally, I find discovering the unknown most pleasureable and not frightening. Once found, I am ready for the next unknown.

Because in essence it is something that we do not know what to expect. The thrill and the agony of when would it be known to us and if ever it will be. It leaves us susceptible to just about anything and we cannot even prepare for it since we are oblivious to what it is. On the other hand, exactly why fear it when that makes life all the more exciting? ;) The monotony can just drag us all to damnation which we wouldn't really be happy about, would we?

Because a common physiological reaction to a lack of knowledge is fear, and it's directed at this abstract concept of the "unknown."
Why fear it? Why fear anything, then?
Then you'd have to ask yourself why you place hope in anything, if you're questioning the rightness to react to concepts with emotion.

Its is only natural we have fears when we do not know what to expect.............
If we trust in God those fears of our future goes right out the door I am a channel to God and each day my vision and outlook with my will and my openness he leads me on the journey and I have no fears anymore because Jesus Christ walks with me and the father............
