Anyway, I knew an girl from Egypt, and I liked the songs she listened to. But now she's gone away... well, more correctly, I moved away and forgot her name. ^-^;;
I like the Hindi song Agar Tum Milijao, by Zeher. Although I don't know what it means. >.> But I did see the video (which I liked, mmHmm), so maybe its about relationships. Though it doesn't have to be! I saw a Russian music video, and the girl was dancing in rather revealing outfits, surrounded by dancing guys (topless), and then the next scene was her with poodles. I found out later she was singing about missing somebody. O.<
So yeah. Recommend some tunes? Just what you think is good music. Oh, and feel free to attach lyrics translation (to English) kay...

If you want a good sample of different kinds of Indian music, look for the soundtrack to a movie called Monsoon Wedding. A good Indian dance CD to look for is Anokha. It's a few years old, however, but it showcases an amazing, quite young, female vocalist with tremendous range.
One of the most accessible Arab artists, who performs a kind of music called "rai" is Cheb Mami, from Morocco.
I am also American, and enjoy listening to all kinds of world music. These are CDs in my collection, after hearing them for the first time, so I think they're wonderful.

Indian music? I can help you....I love Ravi Shankar, every single song he plays are magic...then, recently i've discovered the Vanayakram Brothers with Jonas Hellborg on acoustic bass (an awesome bass player) and with the late Shawn Lane, a very obese but wonderful electric guitar player who can make his guitar sing like a sitar....u can look for the video, a concert they had at Paris, France on a bar, i think it was the year 2002...
then of course, John Mclaughlin with his Shakti band, an all-Indian group, John is the only Briton in there but they play wonderful Indian music with a taste of Western jazz-rock influence....! go get them!

Indian music is versatile and i know you'll love it!
Try Bombay Vikings, Silk route, Rabbi etc.
A movie names Lakshya~ try out Lakshya's songs, they are great: Main aisa kyun hoon, Agar main kahoon.
Agar tum mil jao is a really touching song, the title line means: I'll leave this world if I conquer/get you......

Also you can try classical or Indian folk music
There's this particular song "Maahi Ve" by fakhir, try that out, it's great
