He was certainly the best musician in the band and his guitar work is often overlooked.
I personally prefered his work as a solo artist to that of the others.
With songs like:
Something
Hear comes the Sun
While my guitar...Etc.
He is the one I still like to listen too.
I think it's a shame he didn't leave the Beatles earlier. It was perhaps his influence with an interest in different spiritualities that had the most postive influence on their later work.
He was also staged and promoted one of the 1st big Charity gigs for a 3rd world country. The Concert for Bangla Desh.
You can still get the album on CD, the contributing artsists would still fill a stadium, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, The Band, etc.
Certainly less egocentric than a naked sit-in, in a bed in a New York Hotel room!
Peace and love to a good spirit.

I'm glad that you appreciate George because he often gets overlooked. However, most talented Beatle? I doubt it, when you look at the overall contribution songwritingwise that Lennon & McCartney made to the band. That's not to say that The Beatles would have been as successful or as good without George. He was an integral part of the band's sound and chemistry and the same goes for Ringo too.

Lead- Lennon,McCartney and George all took turns. Huge advantage. Even Ringo won enough bets to lead up some classics. Who didn't have that. BEATLES Bass- Paul still very under-appreciated for this. BEATLES Guitar- This kills me, but Pete. WHO Drummer- Moon had more raw talent, but nobody else could have played the drums for The Beatles. DRAW Writer- Again, Beatles have a group advantage. Paul wrote a song with 2 sentences called Why Don't We Do It In the Road and made it sound great. Unfair advantage for BEATLES Influence- Seriously?? Overall: They will never be dethroned. THE BEATLES

Post-Beatles, I would agree with you. John was great too, but I like more of George's solo stuff than John's, percentage-wise. When the Beatles were together, it's impossible to say. I think they all influenced each other so much that the majority of their songs really were a group effort. Maybe that's why they're still about the best rock band ever (I'm sure that statement will get me flamed to a cinder). I'm sure there was some competition among them too that helped.

I don't. How could we know he is the most talented Beatle, as far as I know he didn't write songs for the band, or only a few. I reckon the duo Lennon/Macca was the only engine of the Beatles. And Harrison, at that time, was only a great musician. His talented songwriting appears later.

I agree with Bowzer and can only add that I too think that George was underrated not only for the contribution he made to the beatles success but also for being a caring guy who was admired by a great many people all over the world.

Thank you for this question.

He was sadly underrated, it is true, but the real alchemy of the Beatles lay in the tension between a twisted, fragile, unorthodox, ever-questioning thinker (John Lennon) and a guy with an uncommon gift for crafting a memorable hook (Paul McCartney).

I would say that Lennon was the No 1 reason for their originality as a band.

Without George they would not have "Here Comes The Sun" and a handful of other great songs, however. I'm in two minds about the whole "Indian" thing, but that was an example of George, in classic Lennon fashion, pushing the band into unknown territory.

RIP.

John Lennon will always be my favourite but in saying that Harrison was an amazing guitarist and 'while my guitar gently weeps' and 'something' both by harrison are two of my favourite beatles songs

He was by far the best guitarist in the group and a pretty decent songwriter. I like his solo songs. I know he was considered the "Quiet Beatle" but he actually liked comedy a great deal. He was a huge fan of Monty Python and helped finance the movie "The Rutles". He also had a small part in it.

George wrote some belting songs, and was underrated as a song writer. He was a superb guitarist and had a great voice, but its down to personal opinion. The more i think of it you are right. Paul was responsible for rupert and the frog chorus, while Lennon married yoko
