The difference in rock music between 1957 and 1967 was huge. 1967 to 1977, 1977 to 1987, and (to a lesser extent) '87 to '97 all saw big stylistic changes. But over the last 15 years or so, not much has been done with rock music. There is new rock music being made, but it all sounds like styles or songs that have come before. Why did rock music stop evolving?

I feel bad for the kids growing up today who think that the absolute derivative garbage that dominates popular rock music today is good.

To be fair, my two teenage daughters also hate a lot of the music that's coming out today. They say it's too focused on pop and rap and that's what's stifling creativity.

Rock music is still evolving, you're just not listening to the right stuff. I think you'll find that a lot of indie rock bands are starting to mix a bit of electronica into their music, and vice versa.
And, as horrible as i feel about saying this, even all that emo "music" is different from the nineties rock. Whether that change is for the better, i'll let you decide.

But definitely, rock and electronica are mixing with some really interesting results - see bands like Hot Chip, Blonde Redhead, Klaxons (and all that 'New Rave" stuff) etc.

I have a feeling that you're view of the "good old days" is slightly tinted as well - there was plenty of derivative garbage in the 60's, 70's, 80's etc, but it's all so forgettable that people only remember the few bands that actually did change music.

I also don't like all the new music or the artists who performs ( i don't want to call it sing ) i mean people like Elvis, Cliff, Beatles and Bee Gees is still popular after decades and will always be but some of the new ones only started a few years ago and already the are fading stars that you won't hear from again

every generation goes thru a plateau period, and the new stuff is kinda ignored cuz ppl don't appreciate it yet. RHCP had something going on that was so diff than anything else at the time and ppl weren't ready to accept it, hopefully new sounding stuff comes out cuz i am sick of all this emo bs....
