I agree that classical music does this the best. Think of "Flight of the Bumblebee" (not a song exactly, but the interlude in an opera). It paints a picture so bold, even children recognize it, and most people don't even know it has lyrics. However, there's always "Riders on the Storm" by The Doors, which, even without the lyrics and before you get to the sound effects at the end, conjures the same images for almost everyone.
