Once on seeing His father, Nanda Baba, and all the inhabitants of Vrindavan collecting various items for the annual Indra-puja, Sri Krishna convinced them to stop and worship Govardhana Hill instead. Krishna explained that Govardhan provides them with everything they need for living and by worshiping this sacred hill all good fortune would automatically come to them.
Following Krishna's advice, brajavasis cooked thousands of wonderful preparations and placed them here, in area between Danivartan-kund and Aniyor village.

According to a legend, before Krishna was born, Indra, the god of Rain, was the chief deity of Vraj. Then Krishna instigated the people to stop worshipping Indra. Indra wanted to show his power over Krishna and brought about a cloud-burst which flooded the countryside for many days. People were afraid that the downpor was a result of their neglect of Indra. But Krishna assured them that no harm would befall them. He lifted Mount Govardhan with his little finger and sheltered men and beasts from the rain. This gave him the epithet Govardhandhari. After this, Indra accepted the supremacy of Krishna.

It is the mountain which stops the clouds to rain and not the Indra. So, Krishna said to worship the Govardhan mountain instead of Indra.

Also, Indra had over confidence and he think he was supreme to all. To teach him a lesson, Krishna took this decision.

(Happy bday Krishna)*

Because he is god himself and Indra is a worker under him.
Why to prey a clerk if you are connected to Boss?

Another reason is to punish the proud of Indra, who thought that he is responsible for the rain and wealth.
