If you can turn it off at night, that would be good, but they are intended to run continuously. If you are worried about wearing it out, turn it "down" (less cool) when you are not home.
Keeping the filter clean is essential

I have three and i run all but one all day long. I live in a house in Texas and if it is shut off for more than 30 minutes you really start to notice. Especially if I have the computer, stove, oven, or dryer on. If you get some fans you may be able to set them up to where you only have to have one running with the fans circulating the air. Or stay in one room with the doors shut and the AC on to run it less.

LOL, why do you ask now? the summer is a month from being over.

Also make sure the filter is clean and so is the grill, this greatly affects performance. The unit will start to Ice over if there isnt proper air flow over the grill (thats the part that gets cold), usually due to dirty filter. Usually what happens is that there isnt air moving the moisture in the air that is landing on the grill which is extremely cold and then procedes to freeze the moisture and it just keeps growing until the filter is cleaned or it burns the motor.
anyways hopes this helps and i hope to get out of this Window'd AC'd house here shortly.
