According to what I have researched...

A baby's heart begins to beat at around 6 weeks. And according to the CDC, "50% of all U.S. abortions are performed at <8 weeks of gestation".

At 6 weeks, this life has a heartbeat! How is that NOT murder!?

I honestly don't see how a person could justify an abortion after reading this information. I could see perhaps a person taking the morning-after pill if they had un-protected sex, or were raped. But an abortion?

keko8338 - I do agree with part of your response. Abortion should not be used as a form of birth control!

I understand that women have the right to make their own choices. What bothers me is the fact that many pro-choicers say that it is not a life at this point. That is what I don't agree with.

If someone is going to have an abortion, they should at least be aware of the facts, and be honest. The baby that they are aborting is alive inside of them, it's not just a thing or "tissue".

murder is against the law.
abortions are not, so they are not considered murder.

I am pro-choice and think that a woman should have the ultimate descion as to if she wants to abort the baby or not.
Abortion is a very touchy subject on YA, so prepare to get some crazy answers.

Oh also, you should double check your research, the heartbeat starts at 7 weeks, not 6.

I agree with you that the baby is alive around 6 or 7 weeks, but every person is different. You cant go around BASHING people for having abortions when you dont know their situation. What if the mother has HIV or a life threatening disease that she will pass on to the baby? Get what I'm saying? But, yeah, im pro choice. =]

This is a hard question because there is a moral answer, and then there is an ethical answer.
Morally, if one believes in the "soul" then yes a fetus is alive, and an abortion is killing that life. Ethically, it can be argued that life begins at birth, therefore abortion is not murder. Also, if a person wants to have an abortion, and they are prevented from doing so, imagine what that child's life will be like. It would be nice to think that they would be adopted by a loving family, however this is often not the case.
Scientifically speaking, many woman have natural abortions (miscarriages), and this can happen long after 8 weeks. There are also woman who have to abort due to their health (they will die if they carry the fetus to term), or who abort because they have too many fetuses (3 and up) and have to "select" a few to live. At 8 weeks a fetus is not viable, it can not live on it's own outside of the mother's body. Viability does not happen until 22-24 weeks (end of the second trimester), and some people think of viability as the time of true life.
This question is very difficult, and does not have a right or wrong answer, which is precisely why people are pro-choice (not pro-abortion), to give the individual the choice whether or not to abort. Obviously, you would choose to not have an abortion, and as a pro-choicer I support this choice.

I don't agree with women having abortions for birth control. But there are some circumstances it is acceptable. Think about a 12 year old or even a 15 year old. There boys is not ready to have a baby nor are they emotionally ready. They may keep the baby and become a mother WAY to young and that is not good for mom or baby. And if they give it up then what till happen to them. I have the right to my body and no one had the right to take that away from me, even an unborn child. If women don't have the right to there body then what comes next! I may not agree with peoples choices, but it is there choice, not mine. Thankfully I am Canadian so I don't have to worry about my choices being taken away. It is not our place to judge it is gods.

You might want women to have an abortion by 6 weeks, but many women don't know by then. Really there may be a heartbeat and maybe a life, but still it would not survive, without the mothers body. Also pro choice is NOT pro abortion it is pro CHOICE.

I have never been able to justify abortion because I am personally against it (myself). There are many things in this world that we cannot change, and this is one of them. You are obviously going to make people feel uncomfortable when posting such things, because, to be honest, a lot of the women here have been forced to have abortions when young. I know that most of my friends have had abortions while still living with their parents because they had to. I am not saying that you are wrong or that anyone else is for that matter, I am just saying that some of these women have really had to go through a whole lot, probably much more than you or I have endured in our lifetimes. Sometimes it is not a choice (in other words) and they live the rest of their lives counting would-have-been birthdays and feeling a lot of guilt. Just saying that maybe we should think about the young women who never really had a choice.

I don't have a problem with abortion until someone uses it for a birth control method.
Abortion is not there for the fact that someone was too lazy to use a birth control method.

I think a women should only be entitled 2 abortions in their lifetime!

A women who has an abortion gets counseling before she under goes the procedure.

I think any women/girl under 16 should have an abortion because I believe they ain't able to support the baby let alone look after the child.

I was 17 when I fell pregnant with my son and I chose to keep the pregnancy because I have the support with family and friends to help me and even with them I got severe post natal.
Some girls don't have the support I have and unfortunately the mother is worse off mentally and finacnially than if she had terminated the pregnancy.

How many "Unwanted" children would there be in the world if we didn't have abortion?

How many children would be in the care of welfare if there wasn't abortion?

I believe in abortion and don't see anything wrong with it if the women/girl isn't using them for birth control!

The only times I truly don't support abortion rights is when people use it for birth control or sex selection. I don't like abortion personally but I don't think it should be illegal. All that will do is create a huge black market for it in this country and we will see companies arranging "abortion tours" for women to travel to places where it is legal. That's what goes on right now in countries where abortion is illegal.

I agree. The baby is alive. I don't understand when women took it upon themselves to be selective on life. Who lives and who dies. Who are you to decide? You didn't get pregnant alone, and it's not just your body when there's another human being living and thriving inside it so how is it a choice for just you?

I understand this is my standard and not everyone will agree. But just because I won't change anyone else's mind doesn't mean the subject can not be discussed. And everyone here has a right to say what their thinkin'.

Your definition of life would also include a tumor. Are you suggesting that Cancer sufferers don't have the tumor removed because that's also murder?

To be alive the fetus must be self sustaining, i.e. if you gave birth it would survive longer than a few hours. Babies born before 22 weeks can not do this and are registered as a miscarriage.
___________________

If what I wrote was so stupid it follows what your definition of life is.

Its functions include the ability to take in food, "tumors do this", adapt to the environment, "Tumors do this as well", grow, "again tumors do this", and reproduce "yep tumors again".

My point was that you selected one of several versions of the definition to prove a point instead of including the complete definitions. This selected version of life would also cover tumors as well as other things such as fetuses.

Most doctors would disagree that a fetus is alive to the extent that if born should receive any medical treatment. If you are saying abortion is murder than you are also including miscarriage and should insist that doctors treat fetuses born before the 22 week period.

It is a right that any parent needs to have.

I saw a video of an abortion at school and has scared the shyt out of me, but if it was a unwelcome pregnancy i would defiantly consider abortion.
