I often hear people saying that we are losing our morals as a country. There’s even the government thing called moral regeneration…..on the other hand you have churches telling you that we are on the losing track because we have turned our backs to God……we are losing faith. But what is morality………. What are the sources of morality…….is religion that one and only source……if morality is about ethics and values, who sets the bar?

Assuming that when we deal with morality, we are dealing with ethics and values; what are the measurements. What is the standard of value for good or morality? Will the standard vary depending on your philosophy and ethics. Many people hold this standard subconsciously. However, it can be quite eye opening to understand what your standard happens to be. Holding this standard consciously allows you to measure whether an action or thing helps you to accomplish or maintain your standard (which would also be your ultimate value) or does it prevent you from accomplishing or maintaining your ultimate value.

Granted; that only living creatures can have values. But life requires self-sustaining action. To maintain life, certain actions are needed. An example would be searching for food or building shelter from the elements. Animals, unlike humans, automatically take actions to maintain their life if they are not stopped by an outside force. Humans, must choose the actions needed to maintain their lives. However, since those actions are not automatic, we need to discover which actions maintain or destroy our lives. Hence, the need for ethics/morality.

Who holds our moral compass? Maybe if we get that correct, then we would be able to say whether our morals have gone down!!!!

Definitely. And it starts with parents. Kids don't get the discipline we used to get as kids, and that's not just with blacks or whites in SA.
On top of this, there is a huge lack of religious education in SA so people have no values anymore.
Kids don't have respect for elders or authority. South Africans don't take the government seriously, because of all the corruption & lack of democracy, even though we're supposed to be a democratic country.
All of this brings moral standards down.... in my opinion.

I don't know.
It could be.
And it also could not be.
You must remember in the past all these thing were swept under the carpet.
And young people were meant to be seen and not heard.
So it meant that people never said how they felt freely which is why it seems all of a sudden things are bad.

My other arguement is that if the standards were so good back then, then why is it that the holier then thou generation did not pass on the high morals which they have.

If the standards are getting low then its because of the generation before us.

I think it is , besides the horrendous crimes such as murder , rape , etc , there is a rise in crimes like fraud , embezzlement , bribery etc , this shows that people are losing their morals. they win your trust then screw you just to make a quick buck also in society there seems to be a greater acceptance of things that seemed very immoral or taboo in the past.

We are slowly becoming morally bankrupt.
We have an Anything goes syndrome that is a bigger threat than CRIME.
