some times truth sets you free, but not always. So, based on the situation that arise you need to think whether you need to tell the truth or not. since truth lets you and others realize, I think it is better to tell the truth.
I did not understand the second part of your question. I'll try to answer. if you feel guilty to tell the truth, you'll feel more guilty. by telling truth people get attention on you, if you keep on telling lies no one trust you. That's what I believe. Good question anyway!

Yes truth will set you free , because if the truth is your guilt then happiness lies within that truth.....and with happiness there is freedom.

Legally? Nine out of ten times, no. It DOES get you a reduced sentence, if you enter a plea bargain, though.
Spiritually.....well, it's confessing of your sins and admitting you're wrong and that you don't feel good about it. It also means facing consequences of whatever you did, so you'll still be not-so-free in the short term.

well, i think saying the truth even if it is not in favour of you is the best thing that you can do.
