First, I recommend seeing a doctor for insomnia. If you cannot devote a full night (8 hours or more) sleeping pills are not for you.

All sleeping pills are prescription only (including ambien, sonata etc)

One OTC (over the counter) medication you can try is simple Benadryl (diphenhydramine). It causes drowsiness which should help you fall asleep. It is not as long acting as prescription drugs, so it might not keep you asleep.

Follow dosing instructions on package.

I am a chronic Insomniac, I like you, was only getting about 2 hours of sleep. I tried Melatonin 3 by it's self and it helped me to fall asleep but I didn't stay asleep. The I added Valerian Root. Started to sleep 6 hours, I have rheumatoid arthritis so I started to take Calcium at bedtime. I now sleep like a baby and last night I received 8 full hours sleep! All are 100% natural and available over the counter at most drug stores and even some grocery stores. You can also drink milk with the Melatonin 3 & Valerian remember to go to bed within one half hour after taking them for the full effect. Root................Sweet dreams!

2 hours of sleep a day (24 hrs?)? If you continue with just 2hours of sleep a day it won't be long till you have a nice long permanent sleep. Go see a doctor and discuss the problem. You may not need pills, you may be already taking or eating something that is interrupting your sleep.

for something like ambien yes, for things like Tylenol PM, nytol, Excedrin PM, these all are over the counter and can be bought at wal-mart, rite-aid etc. (buy store brand cheaper just as good) or go to vitamins section sleep MD, or Melatonin.

all these are choices for you, the ones in vitamin section are a little better choice as not so hard on system if they work for you.
also you should try to not drink alcohol before bed, no caffeine, try to set a pattern of going to bed same time, and bedroom for only 2 things (sex & sleep). no eating in bed, try to have a snack before bedtime so your not hungry.
maybe you need a sound machine in room, they play sounds like the ocean, rain, wind in the trees etc, these cover up outside noises that maybe keeping you from sleeping.

hope some of helps you, I have a husband who has sleep problems so know alot of what your going though.

There are different kinds of sleeping pills. In fact, many. Benadryl 25mg - 50mg is a good start for over the counter type of meds. Many Hospitals use Restoril 15mg-30mg or Ambien 5mg-10mg, in which you would need a Rx for. I would Try Benadryl 1st then ask you private MD for a prescriction for Ambien or Restoril. Either one of those should help you.

Have you heard of the Nikken sleep system? It is a mattress pad, comforter, and pillow and is supposed to encourage deep sleep. My fiance and boss both have them and love them (both of them had trouble getting to sleep, and then would wake up after a few hours). My fiance did try both prescription and non-prescription medicines, but found that they weren't always effective and that he would be very groggy the day after taking them.

Let me know if you would like more info on the sleep system.

Try Melatonin or Tylenol pm or Coral calcium, which are over the counter and not addictive. If these do not help, you should see a doctor.

Same here.... I am on my last alternative... a couple mixed drinks before bed. If this does not work I will have to visit the doctor, to have the privelege to pay him, to tell him I need sleeping pills.

Being a controlled drug you need a script to get them.
